Description

Originally built in 1785, Locust Grove Tavern was the heart of the area, serving many functions for the community.  Not only was it a tavern, but it also served as a jail, a grocery store, as well as a school house. In 1857, the second half of the home was built, and in 2016 and 2017, the home was renovated for its current use as a 3 bedroom, 2 full baths/2 half baths, luxurious residence with historic charm.

The Tavern is conveniently located less than 15 minutes southeast of Downtown Charlottesville in the Glenmore/Keswick area and 5 minutes from Monticello and Carter's Mountain Orchard. Other nearby attractions include the Clifton Inn (within a minute’s drive across the Rivanna River) and Jefferson Vineyards and Blenheim Vineyards.

When walking in the house through the terrace level, the home opens up to a beautifully renovated kitchen, with all of the cooking supplies one could need!  There's a large farm sink, gas stove, spacious refrigerator/freezer, two dishwashers, and plenty of other appliances and cooking tools available for use.  Drink your morning coffee in this beautiful, quaint kitchen set to make you feel like you're back in time, with all of the modern comforts you'd need.  The kitchen flows in either direction joining the two parts of the house; the north wing of the kitchen leads into a cozy living room with couches and a TV.  Off of the south wing from the kitchen you go through a spacious butler’s pantry, turned bar, that opens into a unique dining room (once jail) with a grand, stone fireplace and dining for 12.  With so many additions and renovations over the last 200+ years, there are many interesting spaces, with the pathway through the home taking a different turn at each room.  The surfaces vary from stone to wood and other modern materials, with steps separating most rooms.

There are two staircases to the second floor of the home.  From the dining area, there's a staircase to walk up to the formal living room.  This home has no shortage of places to relax, read, draw, and find a room or nook all to yourself!  The beautiful antique furniture and art make each space a wonderful place to spend time and enjoy peace and quiet. A walk up a few steps will take you into the library. This room also is fully decorated with stunning antiques and paintings, making both rooms feel like you're in a picture-perfect, gorgeous Virginia museum. Passing through the main entry lobby on the second level to the northern side of the house, the master suite has a queen bed, a TV, and an en suite bathroom with a walk-in shower, and a temperature-controlled bathroom floor.

Walking up the stairs to the third floor, there are two additional bedrooms.  The queen bedroom has a lovely sitting area, as well as another TV, and plenty of closet space.  The two bedrooms share a full bathroom with a walk-in shower.  The twin bedroom is located on southern northern side of the home, also with plenty of closet space.  The views from the third floor showcase the rolling hills surrounding the home.

The exterior of Locust Grove Tavern has plenty of outdoor space.  The rear of the house has covered seating both at the terrace level entrance and on the second floor deck, overlooking the magnolia-lined driveway.  There's a large grassy lawn looking out towards the Clifton Inn to the northeast of the home.  This quaint, country style home is perfect for those interested in having a relaxing place to call home while spending time in Charlottesville, whether for a UVA event or family celebration.

We were in town for a family gathering and loved this house. It's close to UVA, downtown, and Monticello, which was perfect for us. The gorgeous decor was exactly what we were looking for, and my mother even approved! The modern renovations fit in seamlessly with the historic features. We hope to return this fall!
